Pet-loving, Highly Skilled Vets
Just like human physicians, a veterinary specialist is someone who has completed extensive training in a narrow field of medicine.
Board-certified surgeons have undergone advanced training consisting of a one-year internship and a three year residency beyond veterinary school. During the residency there are specific training and caseload requirements that must be met. In addition to these requirements, applicants must perform research that is published in a scientific journal and then pass a rigorous examination. |

DEAN FILIPOWICZ
DVM, MS, MBA Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons Dr. Filipowicz earned his veterinary degree from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, then completed an internship and small animal surgical residency at Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.
Following his residency, Dean returned to California where he worked for several years at a specialty hospital in the East Bay before creating the surgical branch of Veterinary Specialty Services in Fresno. Building on these experiences, Dr. Filipowicz formed West Coast Veterinary Surgical, a mobile surgical practice that grew to provide surgical services for all emergency clinics and most large practices on the peninsula. |
In 2014, Dr. Filipowicz merged two emergency clinics with his practice to create a new specialty veterinary group. As the hospital/medical director, he worked with nine other specialists and their teams to prioritize patient care while designing and building the facilities and processes which would allow the eventual sale to a national organization. Dean has since been enjoying the greater face to face time with his patients, clients, and referring veterinarians that Bay West affords him.
Dr. Filipowicz enjoys all aspects of orthopedic, sports medicine, and oncologic surgery with special interests in fracture management, reconstructive surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and advanced multi-modal pain control. His masters research investigated an emerging type of orthopedic fixation which has since become the gold standard in human and veterinary orthopedics. He is published in several veterinary journals, has co-authored book chapters, and has spoken at a number of conventions and symposiums.
Off duty, Dean enjoys all outdoor physical activities that the area has to offer with his wife and their two dogs, a black lab and guide dog career change (Zorba), and jack russel (Andy).
